End Pair Trawling off the NSW coast

The campaign wants the Australian Government and the Australian Fisheries Management Authority to end the trial of pair trawling in the Small Pelagic Fishery and specifically in the waters off the NSW coastline.

Pair trawling is a highly destructive form of industrial fishing that has a high risk of killing marine mammals like dolphins and seals as well as impacting on local fish stocks.

We need sustianable fisheries that support local fishing businesses, not large scale industrial fishing.

End Pair Trawling along the NSW Coast

The Federal Government and the Australian Fisheries Management Authority have just approved a trail of destrcutive and industrial scale Pair Trawling in Commonwealth waters along the NSW coastline.

We're calling on the NSW Government to stand up to the Australian Government and oppose the Pair Trawling trial.

Add your name to the campaign to end Pair Trawling along the NSW coast and to support sustainable local seafood and a healthy marine environment.

Dear Niall Blair, NSW Minister for Primary Industries,

I oppose the introduction of Pair Fishing in the Small Pelagic Fishery along the NSW coast and am calling on the NSW Government to oppose the trial.

The Pair Trawling trial is just the latest effort to allow industrial fishing practices in Australian waters that is a risk to the long term sustainability of the marine environment.

Pair trawling involves two large trawlers hauling one giant net through the water at depths of up to 500m to catch fast swimming pelagic fish. Waters off the NSW coast will be a target of this type of fishing including areas adjacent to the waters fished by local NSW commercial fishers.

I support a local and sustainable seafood industry, not mega nets and industrial fishing.

While some fish caught will end up on our plates, much will end up as bait, be turned into fish food for aquaculture or used in oils for the global 'supplements' industry.

Pair Fishing was banned in the UK due to unacceptable by catch including killing thousands of dolphins.

I urge you as Minister to oppose the trial and join the campaign end Pair Trawling along the NSW coastline.
